YouTube links were cited 7 times in our 25-question check on 2026-10-21, on 7 different questions, and every one of those citations came from Google AI Overviews. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude returned no YouTube link between them.
The videos were tutorials that matched the question: a walkthrough of tracking AI traffic in Google Analytics for the analytics question, a video on fixing what ChatGPT says about a business, one on which page formats AI cites, one on writing comparison pages. AI Overviews cited 61 sources over the whole run, so YouTube was 11% of everything it cited.
The reason is where each assistant looks. AI Overviews is built on Google's index, where videos rank for how-to queries. The API assistants retrieve text pages, read them, and cite what they read; a video has no text to quote.
What to do
A short video with the question as its title can earn an AI Overviews citation, and the same recording can sit on the page that answers the question for the other four. Put the answer in the first minute and in the description, because that is what gets indexed. For questions where no overview appears, which was 3 of our 25, the video changes nothing.
The sample is one run on one topic. Questions about products and local services may pull in video differently.
