How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT

Guide · · 5 min read

ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find, verify and compare. Being one of them is a checklist, and most of it is work you can do this month.

There is no form to submit your business to ChatGPT and no setting that makes it recommend you. When ChatGPT answers a question like "which accounting software should a freelance designer use", it searches the web with its own crawler, reads a handful of pages, and names the businesses it found on them. To be recommended, you need to be findable by that crawler, described consistently on the pages it trusts, and the clearest answer to the specific question.

We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews "How can a small business get recommended by ChatGPT?" on 2026-10-20. Their advice overlapped almost entirely, and it matches what OpenAI documents. This guide puts it in order of what to do first.

We make Seen42, an AI visibility tool, so read our product notes with that in mind. Everything else in this guide works without it.

How ChatGPT finds businesses to recommend

ChatGPT search uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to find and index pages. OpenAI says sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers". A second agent, ChatGPT-User, opens a page when a user's question needs it. Neither is the training crawler, GPTBot, which you can block without affecting search.

When we asked ChatGPT itself how a small business gets recommended, it cited only OpenAI's own help pages, and most of its answer was about shopping: product data from merchants and third-party feeds, with merchants ranked on "availability, price, quality, and whether they're the maker or primary seller". If you sell physical products, that is the part of ChatGPT to read about; Shopify catalogues are already connected and other merchants can apply for a direct feed. For services and software, the rest of this guide applies.

1. Let the search crawler in, and get indexed by Bing

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and check that your CDN or firewall is not blocking it. Three of the five assistants we asked brought up Bing: OpenAI has said ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers, and Perplexity's answer told small businesses to verify their site in Bing Webmaster Tools. In practice a site Bing cannot see is a site ChatGPT struggles to find. Our AI crawler guide covers the robots.txt lines.

2. Complete your listings, and keep them identical

Perplexity's and Gemini's answers both led with this: claim and complete your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps and the directories for your industry, and use the same business name, address, phone number, hours, service area and description everywhere. Assistants cross-check. Conflicting facts are a reason to leave you out.

3. Publish one page per question buyers ask

Write the questions your customers actually ask before they call you, and give each one a page that answers it in the first three sentences: what you do, for whom, where, at what price or in what range, and when a competitor is the better fit. "Best tax preparer for freelancers in Denver" is a page. "Our services" is not. The answer engine optimization checklist covers the page itself.

4. Be on the third-party pages ChatGPT actually cites

For most buyer questions, ChatGPT cites reviews, directories, forums and roundups more than it cites the businesses themselves. For software, that means G2 and Capterra profiles with current details; for local services, Google and Trustpilot reviews and the local directories; for everyone, the comparison articles and "best X" lists that already appear in the answers for your prompts. Earn real reviews that mention the specific service. Never buy or write them; the answers we read warned against that too, and the reputational cost is permanent.

5. Build independent credibility

Gemini and Google AI Overviews both named Reddit, G2, Capterra, Trustpilot and industry publications as places assistants look for corroboration. A mention in a trade publication, a local news story, a partner's integration page or a well-answered Reddit thread does more than a tenth page on your own site.

6. For products, feed ChatGPT your catalogue

If you sell physical goods, keep product titles, prices, images, variants, stock and shipping details clean and complete, and connect them through Shopify or OpenAI's merchant feed. ChatGPT's own answer said merchants are ranked on availability, price, quality and whether they are the maker or primary seller.

7. Measure, in fresh sessions, on a schedule

Ask ChatGPT your 10 to 20 buyer questions in a new chat every week. Record whether you were named, who was named instead, and which sources the answer cited. Answers vary from run to run, so read trends over a month, not single results. The cited sources are your to-do list for step 4.

What does not work

Stuffing your pages with "best" and "top". Writing about yourself in superlatives; the one study that tested it found an authoritative tone changed nothing while specific, sourced facts helped. Asking ChatGPT to remember your business; nothing you type into your own chats affects anyone else's answers. Paying anyone who promises a guaranteed recommendation.

Where Seen42 fits

Seen42 checks the prompts your buyers ask on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews, shows who is named and cited instead of you, and builds and hosts comparison, facts and guide pages from your own facts. Paid plans start at $39 a month for 15 prompts; the Free plan checks 10 prompts once on ChatGPT and Gemini. It suggests the buyer prompts from your own website, shows which sources ChatGPT and the other assistants cited for each one, drafts the answer page for a gap from your own facts, hosts it after your approval, and re-asks the same prompts weekly so you can see what changed.

Questions, answered

No. OpenAI documents an ads crawler for ads shown in ChatGPT, but the recommendations in an answer come from what ChatGPT finds on the web. Anyone selling a guaranteed recommendation is selling something they do not control.
OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach search, and new pages are usually found within days of being crawled. Whether the page is used in an answer depends on the question and varies from run to run.
OpenAI says ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers alongside its own crawler, and reporting has named Microsoft Bing as one. In our check, three of five assistants brought up Bing, and Perplexity's answer advised verifying the site in Bing Webmaster Tools.
Usually because the competitor is on the pages ChatGPT read for that question: a roundup, a review site, a directory. Ask the question yourself, open the cited sources, and you will see where you are missing.
